One of my passion, is gardening. Since we moved into our home in 2006, I've made several flower gardens, but I never tried doing a vegetable garden, until now. I have no experience and like I said, this is our first attempt to growing our own vegetables, hopefully we will enjoy great vegetables all summer long. The kids were just as excited as we were about making the garden and planting the seeds and vegetable plants.
I am sharing with you the steps we took to make our first garden but since it's our first one, I am not suggesting by any means you do the same. Lets wait and see if the vegetables grow first!
Step 1: My husband made me a nice wooden garden box.
Step 2: We stapled a layer of geotextile to the garden box.
I'm really lucky to have extra hands to help!
Geotextile can be installed right over the grass with no worries of grass growing in your garden.
Step 3: Fill the garden box with Top Soil.
O.k. I have to be honest, my husband did all the hard work ;).
Step 4: We added 4 bags of composted sheep manure.
Step 5: We put strings to separate the planting areas. 1' x 1'.
I think our 6 year old daughter is a pretty good photographer.
This is what it looks like when the strings are in place.
Step 6: Go shopping for your vegetable plants (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers) and buy your seeds.
Step 7: Make a planting plan (I made my plan a little to late in the process so where you see the Zuchini and ?, this means I have no idea what I planted there, if I did plant anything LOL....So you should make your plan BEFORE you start planting...and FOLLOW IT... I had made it before but got a bit mixed up when it came to planting. Hey! It's my first garden..
And here it is, the final result!!! My husband had to put some chicken wire all around it because our dog likes to play in the earth and we have a little groundhog friend that lives in our yard. Don't know if that's going to keep him away, but I'm crossing my fingers.
My tomato plants look really good, what do you think? That's thanks to Matthews farm and there amazing employees and plants. Now it's my job to take care of that garden and do my best to get the best vegetables.
Can't wait to show you the results!
